For twenty years, Shearwater has given clients a majestic spectacle above the Victoria Falls on the famous “Flight of Angels” but there are some who say the view is even better from the bottom. So, in the low water months between August and December, we have introduced “The Devil’s Delight” for the hardy few who are willing to brave the steep hike down into the sacred Batoka Gorge to behold a watery wonderland and swim under the mystic spray of the falls as they cascade 110 metres from the Zambezi above.
August to December only. Time of Activity : Approx three hours.
The Batoka Gorge and Ndebele Village Hike
This is a more conventional hike a bit further downstream from Victoria Falls. The challenging walk starts at Rapid 23, meanders for approximately 3 km beside the Zambezi before ascending from Rapid 25 and offers a rare opportunity to swim in the Zambezi River without the unwelcome attention of territorial hippos and predatory crocodiles. Once at the top of the Gorge, participants will be welcomed into a genuine, traditional Ndebele village where brunch will be served by their gracious African hosts who are happy to share their rich, ancient and seldom-seen African culture.
This half day excursion operates all year round.
