Creating Meaningful Change

Giving back to the world that gives so much to us.

Every day we work, live in, and experience the beauty of Africa. It’s only right that we help enhance and uplift the communities, people and wildlife around us. The Shearwater Fund – a not-for-profit fund where we donate a percentage of our turnover.

Community Engagement

It’s not about us. It’s about you.

We work closely with the local communities to engage them in our projects and include them as key stakeholders.

Clean Water: by sinking boreholes in rural areas, communities gain access to fresh, clean water close to their homes.
Sanitation and Safety: building modern latrines in local villages improves sanitation and offers residents a safe alternative to open defecation.
Human Elephant Conflict reduction: As the human population grows, human elephant conflict grows too. By helping villagers find ways to live harmoniously alongside elephants it reduces the incidences of attacks on elephants. By planting chilli plants along their borders and using beehive corridors they not only generate an income from a cash crop and honey, they deter elephants from entering their land.

Victoria Falls is at the centre of cruicial animal corridors for many endangered animals. We support the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust (VFWT) who, along with other conservation projects, ensure that these corridors remain safe for the migration of wildlife for feeding. Some other conservation projects they work on include ensuring a varied gene pool for mating, rehabilitating injured animals and tracking endangered animals.

Education is key to upliftment and progress, but for some, it’s not an option due to financial constraints. That’s why we provide bursaries for nearly 90 at risk and orphaned children in communities around us. We also work with local schools to upgrade their playgrounds and sports facilities. Our goal is to improve as many lives as we can and education is key.

We work with the Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit (VFAPU), a non-profit organization who are dedicated to the conservation of our local wildlife and natural resources. VFAPU protect the wildlife and habitat from subsistence and commercial poacher pressure, rescue and rehabilitate animals injured by human interference, train and find employment for ex-poachers, and educate children through school and community awareness programs.

Plastic Free

Shearwater is committed to reducing our footprint on our planet,  As part of this we are moving towards going totally plastic free. We don’t use any plastic bottles on any of our activities, in our restaurants or at Explorers Village. In Explorers Village we have central water points were clients can fill up their water bottles for free.

Zambezi Elephant Welfare and Conservation Trust

Shearwater are dedicated to supporting the ZEWACT elephant herd and helping the wider aims of the Trust by helping to fund research, pioneering humane treatment of elephants in human care and support the conservation of the iconic African elephant.

Working with Conservationists, welfare scientists, animal psychologists, veterinarians and those with practical experience and skills we take an evidence based approach. Our primary goal is to provide the best care possible for the elephants under our guardianship, in a natural elephant habitat. Our secondary goal is to find how our elephant ambassadors can aid efforts to help conservation of their wild brethren. We invite all with a passion and interest in nature, animals and of course Elephants, to come and visit our amazing herd and help us help elephants!
